What Our Clients Say
Monroe County families who trained with us and went on to change lives in their community:
"My doodle at 2 years enjoys her life more with the safety and freedom she has — and we're now visiting patients at Unity Hospital every week. The training gave her the calm, reliable behavior therapy dog work requires. The trainers prepared us perfectly for our RocDog certification."
"We had 4 sessions with our chocolate lab — he is the most well-behaved dog ever! The commands work like magic. Our trainer was available any time through text. After completing the advanced course, he passed his therapy dog certification easily. We now visit elementary schools in Brighton every month."
"I learned so much through this program — not just my dog, but ME as a handler. The therapy-specific sessions completely prepared us for our certification. We now volunteer at Monroe Community Hospital and it has been the most rewarding thing I've ever done with my dog. Absolutely transformational."
Therapy Dog Training in Rochester, NY — Everything You Need to Know
If you've ever watched a therapy dog work — watched a nervous patient soften, a grieving family member exhale, a child's eyes light up — you already know the power. Therapy dogs change lives. And in Rochester, NY, the demand for certified therapy dog teams is growing every year. At Off Leash K9 Training of Rochester, we don't just train therapy dogs — we certify them too. That makes us uniquely positioned to be your complete solution.
What Makes a Good Therapy Dog in Rochester?
The most important quality is temperament — not breed, not size, not looks. A good therapy dog candidate is genuinely friendly with strangers, calm in unfamiliar environments, comfortable with unusual sounds and equipment, not reactive around other dogs or people, and able to maintain gentle, controlled behavior when approached by patients or students.
- Friendly and calm with all types of people — including those who move differently or speak differently
- Not reactive or fearful of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, or medical equipment
- Solid basic obedience — before therapy-specific training begins
- At least 1 year old for most certification organizations
- Handler who is committed to regular volunteering and ongoing training
❤️ Not sure if your dog has the right temperament? Call us at (585) 445-3260 for a free consultation. We evaluate candidates honestly — we'll tell you if your dog is a strong therapy dog prospect or if a different path might suit them better. Many dogs who "seem unlikely" surprise us completely.
Therapy Dog vs. Service Dog vs. Emotional Support Animal — What's the Difference?
These three terms are frequently confused — and they have very different legal standing and training requirements:
- Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort to other people in institutional settings as volunteer teams. No ADA public access rights. Certified through organizations like RocDog or Therapy Pets Unlimited.
- Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for their handler's disability. Full ADA public access rights everywhere. Intensive individualized task training required.
- Emotional support animals provide comfort to their owner through companionship. No special training required. Limited housing protections under FHA.
Our program at Off Leash K9 Rochester focuses on therapy dog preparation — training and certifying dogs and handlers to serve the Monroe County community.
The Prerequisite: Solid Obedience First
Before therapy-specific training can begin, your dog needs reliable basic obedience. Dogs who haven't been formally trained will complete our Basic Obedience program first — which is actually built into our Therapy Dog Development Course (lessons 1-4 are obedience, lessons 5-8 are therapy-specific). If your dog already has solid obedience from our program or elsewhere, we can potentially jump straight to therapy-specific sessions. Call us to discuss your dog's current training level.
Want to raise a therapy dog from puppyhood? Start with our Puppy Jump Start program as early as 10 weeks old. Puppies who are socialized and trained early make the smoothest transitions into therapy dog work.
RocDog and Therapy Pets Unlimited — Rochester's Certification Organizations
We certify through two organizations that actively place therapy dog teams throughout Monroe County:
- RocDog Community Working Dogs — A Rochester-based organization placing certified therapy dog teams at hospitals, schools, assisted living facilities, and community events throughout the Rochester area. Active placement opportunities and an engaged volunteer community.
- Therapy Pets Unlimited — A nationally recognized organization with certified therapy teams throughout New York State. Certification recognized at facilities across Monroe County and beyond.
As certified evaluators for both, we conduct the actual certification test at our Fairport facility upon successful completion of the 8-lesson course. View full program pricing →
